Why train with us?
Our evidence-based, pioneering approach to dance is underpinned by wellbeing theory, ensuring a level of rigour throughout. We have been developing and refining this approach over the past 8 years - resulting in extraordinary, life-enhancing benefits for participants.
Our findings reveal improvements in participants' wellbeing and body appreciation (63%), an alleviating effect on their feelings of stress and anxiety (86%), and a clinically meaningful improvement in levels of fatigue (46%). In addition, 96% of participants reported improvements to their mood, and an increase in life satisfaction (42%).
Our approach in the field is unique, using creativity and collaboration to inspire people to move. We combine dynamic and playful movement activities with moments of reflection and discussion, which has been described as, “a mix of connecting with myself, others, mind and body.”
We place importance on choice making and reciprocity, purposefully co-creating an environment that contrasts with archaic and hierarchical models of healthcare, resulting in greater feelings of resilience, belonging and agency. Our work has been described as brilliant, innovative and inspiring, by the likes of 10 Downing Street and City Hall, which you can read more about on our recognition page.
We are members of the UK’s leading CPD Certification Service. Our Dance in Cancer Care - Introductory Training programme is CPD certified already, and we’re working towards all of our training offers being certified by the end of 2025.
Why is this work needed?
For half of the UK population (born after 1960), 1 in 2, will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Despite early detection efforts and treatment advancements, rates of diagnosis are predicted to rise over the coming years.
Research shows that over 70% of people living beyond cancer report ongoing challenges that severely affect their quality of life. Healthcare systems now view cancer as a long term health condition, made worse by insufficient support services.
Dance is evidenced to alleviate the wide ranging physical, mental, emotional and social health challenges associated with cancer diagnosis, treatment, recovery and survivorship.
Physical activity is beneficial at all stages of cancer treatment, as well as post treatment to (in some cases) prevent recurrence. Dance is a holistic, creative and enlivening form of physical activity. Its ability to help people feel connected is powerful, supporting them to move through limiting beliefs, and find relief from the seriousness of cancer.
There is a clear need to build a sustainable community of practice around dance in cancer care. Our training offers aim to equip more people to do the work so we can collectively respond to the current and growing need for support. We are working to catalyse a network of practitioners operating in this space across the UK and beyond - inviting you to be part of the solution, to be a part of the Dance in Cancer Care movement.
